...Mansion of Sullivan County changed everything. After a three-year quest, they had finally found the one, and promised we would move into it soon enough to have Thanksgiving dinner with stuffed haddock, a compromise my parents had to make when I turned annoyingly pesco-vegetarian on them. Evidently, the fact that the property was called “Dream’s Landing” on the deed was irresistible to my father. It blinded him from the property’s very un-mansion-like faults: broken windows, malfunctioning heating, ancient plumbing, peeling wallpaper and even holes...
...heard another term for pesco-pollo-vegetarians: beady-eyed vegetarians. Basically, they'll eat things with beady eyes (lobster, fish, chicken) but not with big, sad, Bambi eyes (cows, lambs). This definition sounds flaky, but a friend of mine explained it by saying he would eat only things he thought he could kill himself. He figures he can kill a fish but not a cow. That seems like a more honest and consistent rationale than some of the others I've heard. ROD STEPHENS Boulder, Colo...
Like any country, vegetarianism has its hidden complexities. For one thing, vegetarians come in more than half a dozen flavors, from sproutarians to pesco-pollo-vegetarians (see box). The most notorious are the vegan (rhymes with intriguin' or fatiguin') vegetarians. The Green Party of the movement, vegans decline to consume, use or wear any animal products. They also avoid honey, since its production demands the oppression of worker bees. TV's favorite vegetarian, the cartoon 8-year-old Lisa Simpson, once had a crush on a fellow who described himself as "a Level Five vegan--I don't eat anything...
...true believers--who refrain from meat as an A.A. member does from drink and do a spit-take if told that there's gelatin in their soup--a semivegetarian is no vegetarian at all. A phrase like pesco-pollo-vegetarian, to them, is an oxymoron, like "lapsed Catholic" or "semivirgin." Vegetarian Times, the bible of this particular congregation, lays down the dogma: "For many people who are working to become vegetarians, chicken and fish may be transitional foods, but they are not vegetarian foods ... the word 'vegetarian' means someone who eats no meat, fish or chicken...
Track to Run On. For five years, while BW's 27 other divisions (Pesco pumps, Warner gears, etc.) were making money, Norge had operated in the red. Said Sayre: "I plan to run this outfit the way I ran Bendix-at a profit." When he took over, Norge had a new line of topnotch appliances. But in large areas of the country its products were not even being distributed. Sayre launched a "dealer-getting" program, set up selling tie-ins with distributors for Motorola and Zenith, which make radio and TV sets but no white goods. Dealers began signing...
