...would doom it--he has been leading town-hall meetings around the country. In January he proposed devoting the entire budget surplus to the problem (something he may regret now that the cigarette money is gone), an approach that last week won the support of Republican Senators Pete Domenici and Phil Gramm. (Their surprising move pulled the rug out from under House Republicans, who want to use some of the surplus for a huge election-year tax cut--$702 billion over 10 years.) So far so good. But saving Social Security means making hard choices--moving part of the trust...

...hatched the idea of starting his own band. He first came to the U.S. from Johannesburg at age two, returned at age 13, and then in 1986 finally settled here for good. One of the things he liked about the U.S. was that he could "listen to everything from Pete Seeger to the Jackson Five." In 1991 he hooked up with jazz drummer Carter Beauford, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley and bassist Stefan Lessard. Only a few years ago, few took the geeky ideologue seriously. Infuriated by what he saw as Governor Pete Wilson's anti-immigrant stance, Unz challenged him in the '94 G.O.P. primary, garnering 34% of the vote. Unz's opposition to Proposition 187, the measure that would have excluded illegal immigrant children from public school, has stood him well in attracting Latino support. "My mother learned English easily in school," he says. "Latino parents want their kids to learn English...

...inexpensive and homemade instruments--was all the rage, and in 1957 Lennon formed a band called the Quarrymen. By the following year, the group had been joined by McCartney and his school friend George Harrison, then just 14. In 1960, calling themselves the Silver Beatles, and with drummer Pete Best in tow, they sailed to Germany to play the riotous red-light-district bars of Hamburg, drink Herculean quantities of beer and gulp down handfuls of illicitly energizing pills to keep them stage ready seven nights a week...
