Peter Skaarup, a Member of Parliament from the populist People's Party, which has long campaigned for immigration controls, called the new package of laws "a turning point for Danish refugee policy which can turn into something very good." The People's Party won 12% of the vote in last November's election, up from 8% in 1998, but it's not part of the government coalition.
