Ornithologist ROGER TORY PETERSON at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa.: "Many people go through life as though they are wearing blinders or are sleepwalking. Their eyes are open, yet they may see nothing of their wild associates on this planet. Their ears, attuned to motor cars and traffic, seldom catch the music of nature -- the singing of birds, frogs or crickets -- or the wind. These people are biologically illiterate -- environmentally illiterate -- and yet they may fancy themselves well informed, perhaps sophisticated. They may know business trends or politics, yet haven't the faintest idea of what makes the natural world...

...general as a refined refuge for the well-heeled, Colorado Springs (pop. 259,000) has long enticed tourists with attractions like Pikes Peak Highway and the elegant Broadmoor Hotel. But in more recent years it has become a magnet for military installations. To the east of the city is Peterson Air Force Base; to the north is the U.S. Air Force Academy; to the south is the Army's Fort Carson; and buried deep in Cheyenne Mountain to the southwest, shielded behind 25-ton doors, is the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). New York City's Deputy Mayor Alair Townsend points out, for example, that about 14% of the homeless...

...crunch. Perhaps the most sinister aspect of the budget deficit is that its effects are gradual and masked by the general prosperity. "Deficits are not explosive," said Heller. "They are corrosive." Most disturbing, the U.S. will become a debtor nation this year for the first time since 1917. Peter Peterson, former chairman of the Lehman Bros. Kuhn Loeb investment firm and a guest at the TIME board meeting, said that unless action is taken to bring down the deficit and the dollar's value, America could owe foreigners $1 trillion by the end of the decade. Observed Heller...
