...American friends to protect him may be limited. Regardless of what assistance the former defense minister may have offered the U.S., he will eventually be turned over to the Iraqis to be hanged should the Baghdad government request it, a spokesman for U.S. commander in Iraq Gen. David Petraeus told TIME. The spokesman said the execution orders for Hashem had not yet been formally approved and added, "We will hand him over, he has been convicted by an Iraqi court -if they request it, we will hand him over." A senior Iraqi official insists that the request to hand over...

...Sticks and Stones While it is true that the U.S. right has made political hay from MoveOn.org's ad asking if we should call General Petraeus "General Betray Us," it is also true that most Americans found the ad offensive [Oct. 1]. It was outside the bounds of acceptable political dialogue, unless you happen to be 17 years old. And Michael Kinsley's defense of the ad was equally offensive. People can disagree with the general, but he deserves respect, earned by his service to the country and the high position he has attained. Richard Kapanka, Greensboro...

...longtime Republican, but I agree that the candidates and talking heads who are tripping over one another to crusade for Petraeus' honor need to take a step back and realize how silly they look. Kinsley made an excellent point, but he wants...

...Republican, and I want us out of Iraq. But the ad crossed the line. Kinsley sits at a desk typing away while Petraeus leads people who take bullets for you and me. It's not trite; it's reality. Agree or disagree with the war, but don't insult those standing in harm's way so we can have this debate in the comfort of our homes. Mark Carpenter, San Antonio...

...officials overseeing southern Iraq have gotten sketchy information indicating that Iranian operatives may be entering Iraq to train Iraqi guerrillas at sites in and around Karbala and Najaf. American commanders in Iraq have long asserted that Iran operates guerrilla training facilities for Iraqi militants near Tehran. Indeed, Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, says the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad, Hassan Kazemi-Qomi, is in reality a member of the Revolutionary Guards. Increasingly, U.S. soldiers are wondering if handlers from Iran's elite security forces have begun schooling and organizing fighters in the very areas American forces nominally...
