William Touchstone, a London goldsmith, has two daughters who are exactly the opposite in character. Girtred is ambitious to be a lady, while Mildred is contented with her station. Sir Petronel Flash, an adventurous knight without fortune, applies to Touchstone for the hand of Girtred in order to enrich himself by the sale of the land left the young woman by her grandmother.
