...Gresham Bayne practices medicine in some pretty unusual places. Just last month the San Diego physician was worshipping at the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church when a fellow parishioner collapsed in her pew. Rather than call 911 to rush the 96-year-old woman to the hospital, Bayne asked the ushers to take her to the church parlor. The doctor, who is something of a gadget freak, was equipped for any contingency. Stashed in his black bag--actually a blue-and-gray fishing-tackle box--was a miniaturized version of every diagnostic tool he needed to assess her symptoms...

More vindication: Jones anticipated last week's news by suggesting long ago that life on Mars takes the form of a supercilious ass who wants to disintegrate Earth with his "Iludium pew-36 Explosive Space Modulator" because Earth obstructs his view of Venus. Earthkind's hero, Bugs Bunny, snuffs out Marvin the Martian's modulator fuse and saves the world, a feat that, theologians agree, must rank slightly ahead of Daffy Duck's space exploration in quest of "Aludium Phosdex, the shaving-cream atom...

...when Campaign '96 rolled around, Taylor shocked his editors by standing down, leaving the business in order to lobby it, and persuading the Pew Charitable Trusts to fund his new role as a "journalism reformer." "I would hope it could unfold as kind of a running debate, with Clinton responding to what Dole said last night and back again," he says...

...smaller. In the latest TIME/CNN Election Monitor, a continuing poll of registered voters, only 15% call themselves Perot supporters, down from 20% five months ago. He is losing support fastest among the affluent and educated, who also tend to vote the most. Independent voters, says a poll by the Pew Research Center, would now prefer a generic third-party candidate to the razor-tongue billionaire...

WASHINGTON: Depending on which poll you read, Steve Forbes has either taken the lead or fallen further behind Bob Dole in the New Hampshire primary race. A survey of 543 Republicans and independents (who can vote in New Hampshire's primary) by Washington's Pew research center has Forbes for the first time out front, with 29 percent of the vote, compared to 24 percent for Dole. But don't go popping corks at Forbes campaign headquarters just yet, says chief political correspondent Michael Kramer. "It's a flawed poll. Almost half of those polled were independents, who probably...
