So the ignorant West German journalists misunderstood, as did their American colleagues based in West Germany. The Berliners knew perfectly well Kennedy didn't say, "I am a Pfannkuchen!" but, as he also said, "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin." And they loved him for it.
