History is no guide. Nations are not some natural, organic phenomenon but complex accumulations of strength, alliances and enmities. And the passion for nationhood has swung between eras of consolidation and fragmentation: the single-state world of the Roman Empire; the 500-odd nations of the 1500s Renaissance. In the post-cold war age, people impatient with the map they've inherited appear to be caught in between. A globalized economy is melting down the relevance of nationhood at the same time that the dispossessed's unrealized yearnings to be a state are gaining legitimacy...
Women tend to suffer their first heart attack 10 years older than men. Yet, partly because the women are older, those heart attacks are more often fatal. This is a postmenopausal phenomenon, a trade-off for years of protection from estrogen. Staying bathed in the hormone keeps blood vessels elastic and free of hardened-plaque formations. Estrogen also instructs the liver to churn out more HDL, or good cholesterol, which pulls plaque away from artery walls...

And if their friends are anything like mine, they won't hesitate in sharing their opinion of the boyfriend or girlfriend, be it positive or negative.
