Prokofiev: Ivan the Terrible (Mezzo Irina Arkhipova, Baritone Anatoly Mokrenko, Narrator Boris Morgunov, Ambrosian Chorus and Philharmonia Orchestra, Riccardo Muti, conductor; Angel; 2 LPs). This oratorio, arranged from Prokofiev's score for Eisenstein's two-part Ivan the Terrible film, makes splendid melodrama. Muti conducts a dashing blend of ominous march rhythms, pagan-sounding brass flourishes and pealing Russian bells...

There was a time when life was not so well ordered. In the 1950s Karajan's guiding hand could be found simultaneously at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, La Scala, London's Philharmonia Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. Says he: "I had to do it because I wanted to see what the limits were, and what was nearest to my heart...

Mozart: The "Great" Mass in C Minor, K. 427 (New Philharmonia Orchestra, Raymond Leppard, conductor; Seraphim; $3.98). Over the years, publishers have used the word great to distinguish this work from a Mass in the same key written when Mozart was still in his teens. But if ever a score deserved that adjective without qualification, it is K. 427. Composed in 1782-83, its style looks backward to the cantata-type Mass of Bach's day, but its expressiveness and symphonic drive anticipate Beethoven and the romantic era. The performance, led by Conductor-Musicologist Leppard, would be worth having...

Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 93-104 -"London Symphonies", Vol. 9 (Philharmonia Hungarica; Antal Dorati, conductor; London/Stereo Treasury; 6 LPs; $20.94). Dorati herewith completes his collection of all the Haydn symphonies, one of the most successful and rewarding projects in the history of recording. Along the way, Dorati has offered many a joy. Among them are the zestful accounts of Symphonies Nos. 36-48 (Vol. 6), notably including the somber "Trauer" (No. 44), the amusing "Farewell" (No. 45) and the radiant "Maria Theresia " (No. 48), a rich collection of middle-period Haydn. He has also offered an "appendix" album, with alternate Haydn...

Dvorak: The Stokowski Sound ("New World" Symphony; RCA Red Seal; 2 discs; $6.98). This two-record set of the familiar Symphony No. 9 in E Minor comprises the 92-year-old maestro's 1973 taping at Walthamstow Town Hall outside London with the New Philharmonia and a reissue of the same symphony recorded in 1927 when he led the Philadelphia Orchestra. Both readings are dramatic, reflecting the vigorous personality of the conductor. The new recording differs chiefly in tempo. Even with two repeats omitted in the Scherzo movement, the symphony runs some 5½ minutes longer, with a tediously...
