Chicago church officials appear to be among the most aggressive in addressing the rise of Santa Muerte. Catholic officials in New York, Denver and Phoenix say they are unaware of Santa Muerte's increasing popularity in their communities. Father Oscar Cantu of Houston says he has watched botanicas and Santa Muerte gain popularity in his largely Mexican-American community, particularly among poor, uneducated immigrants. Father Cantu says he has made clear to his members that Santa Muerte is in conflict with the church's teaching. However, he says there has been little discussion about the topic among the broader church...

...James Gray were more sensitive to these issues, then his film might seem less a propaganda co-written by the NYPD’s PR branch and the Department of Homeland Security, and more like the excellent crime thriller it might have been (and sort of is). Thankfully, Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg bolster Gray’s average direction and his amateurish screenplay. Phoenix’s character, Bobby, runs a Brooklyn nightclub under the auspices of a shifty Russian family, while Wahlberg’s character, Bobby’s brother Joseph, serves as a decorated police officer...

...Like all sequels, TOPOFF 4, the government's upcoming blockbuster counterterrorism exercise, running all this week, will be bigger, scarier and more expensive than the one before. Terrorists will smuggle radioactive material into the United States and then launch three coordinated dirty-bomb attacks in Portland, Phoenix and Guam. More than 15,000 people will participate, from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to local mayors, police officers and nurses. Professional make-up artists will create oozing "wounds" for volunteer victims, and equipment will be flown in from across the country to detect and contain the "contamination...

...main players would not know exactly what was going to happen in advance. The element of surprise is what makes terrorism attacks so challenging. So why do we already know that the first dirty bomb will go off in Guam, followed, hours later, by similar attacks in Portland and Phoenix? (This is from a Homeland Security press release, by the way.) And last week, the AP did a story telling us the exact locations of the attacks - at a power plant in Guam, on the Steel Bridge in Portland and at the intersection of Rts. 101 and 202 near Phoenix...

...explain: Why isn’t French music big in France? Unfortunately, the cliché stereotypes don’t apply. It’s not like the French import foreign pop because they’re lazy. They give as good as they get, even if bands like Phoenix and Air aren’t as popular in their home country as they are overseas. And it’s not as if Parisians are just too impolite, too hostile, to support local groups. In fact, they’re a little too nice. Jazz, no matter its quality...
