Usage:

...when I took a Photoshop class with an assignment to create fake ads - I did three. I essentially took three different pictures that I ripped out of magazines of cool urban types, two guys and one girl, and then superimposed text over the middle of the photograph. The words were treehugger, damn hippie and bleeding heart. The point I was getting at is that we have stereotypes about what treehuggers, damn hippies and bleeding hearts should look like. You should be allowed to be a modern city dweller and still care about the environment...

When I saw the doctored Reuters photograph of smoke rising over Beirut, side by side with the unaltered version of the same scene, the first thing I thought was: which is supposed to be the scary one? If I saw either cloud of smoke rising from a bomb blast in my own city, I wouldn't be worried much about where it fell on the Pantone color wheel. (More-elaborate comparisons of the two altered photos, which led Reuters to pull over 900 pictures by photographer Adnan Hajj, have been springing up on YouTube; best to search on "Reuters," perhaps...

...Giants I was distressed to read "Revenge of the Whale Hunters" [July 3]. Norway's flouting of the International Whaling Commission rules is particularly offensive because it bespeaks the whalers' pleasure in defying international opinion. This summer a group of tourists who had gone to Norway to see and photograph the magnificent animals were horrified to see a whale harpooned before their eyes. That bloody scene was followed by the grisly sight of the butchering of a carcass on another ship. With its income from North Sea oil, Norway has no economic reason to support its contemptuous stance on whaling...
