...Barth's new book, Lost in the Funhouse, which is a collection of stories for "print, tape, live voice." The Funhouse of the title is the metaphysical maze of reality, perception, and creation. The book is an extraordinary inside-outside-inside exploration of the process of composition, like a photograph of a man taking a photograph. Whitehead said that literature is that which embodies what it indicates. When that which is embodied is the act of embodiment, there is bound to be a bang, probably the reader slamming shut the book...

In 1938 Hitler was chosen to be TIME'S Man of the Year (the criterion, as always, was news impact not moral worth). Since no adequate color photograph was available, TIME had to settle for a rather innocuous picture of Hitler in khaki. That is exactly why many artists find the concept so irresistible. Dennis Oppenheim displays a photograph of a giant nebula made out of aluminum chips that he sprinkled on a field out side New Haven, Conn. Michael Heizer shows a photograph of five holes he dug in the Black Rock desert in Nevada. Robert Smithson exhibits his Non-Site, five trapezoidal woodbins filled with chunks of ore, plus an aerial photograph of the mines in Franklin, N.J., whence they came. This is meant to allow the viewer to contemplate the fact that "140 minerals" are found in the earth...
