...MAKE A HOME INVENTORY Walk around your house and videotape or photograph your belongings to create a record of what you own. Include with those images an audio description or a written record of where and when you purchased each item and how much you paid. Share a copy with your insurance agent. They will be able to tell you if you need a separate policy for any items. Keep a copy of your inventory in a secure place (like a safe-deposit box) outside your home. You can't stop disasters, but you may be able to lessen their...

It is a Halloween night in the mid-'80s, and Ryan Adams, 11, is in full Kiss make-up, thrusting out his chin and sticking out his tongue like a tiny Gene Simmons. It's an image worth lingering over because in the here and now--early fall in his East Village apartment in New York City--Adams is doing a fair impression of an 11-year-old brat. She also wanted viewers to discover, in her photographs of "ordinary" people, what was feral or bleak or unnerving in us all. It's all there in A young Brooklyn family going for a Sunday outing, N.Y.C., a couple with their...

...It’s a photograph of the Boston Selects, an all-star collection of nine-year-olds that are mostly grinning broadly, still too young to know that hockey players aren’t supposed to look adorable. And right in the middle, standing three feet from each other in the back row, are Harvard defensemen Welch and Lannon...
