...when I took a Photoshop class with an assignment to create fake ads - I did three. I essentially took three different pictures that I ripped out of magazines of cool urban types, two guys and one girl, and then superimposed text over the middle of the photograph. The words were treehugger, damn hippie and bleeding heart. The point I was getting at is that we have stereotypes about what treehuggers, damn hippies and bleeding hearts should look like. You should be allowed to be a modern city dweller and still care about the environment...
When I saw the doctored Reuters photograph of smoke rising over Beirut, side by side with the unaltered version of the same scene, the first thing I thought was: which is supposed to be the scary one? If I saw either cloud of smoke rising from a bomb blast in my own city, I wouldn't be worried much about where it fell on the Pantone color wheel. This summer a group of tourists who had gone to Norway to see and photograph the magnificent animals were horrified to see a whale harpooned before their eyes. That bloody scene was followed by the grisly sight of the butchering of a carcass on another ship. With its income from North Sea oil, Norway has no economic reason to support its contemptuous stance on whaling...
...Ghassan Farran, a doctor and head of a local cultural organization called Thought and Culture, stares at the ruins of his home in disbelief. His apartment was on the third floor, although fortunately his family had fled Tyre days earlier. Dr. Farran says he is looking for his family photograph albums, but all he can do is gaze hopelessly at the scene of devastation before him. ?All of my memories are gone, when my children were babies. They have killed my dreams,? he says...
