Died. Werner Heisenberg, 74, iconoclastic German nuclear physicist who joined with Albert Einstein, Max Planck and others in repealing some of Newton's laws of physics during the 1920s and 1930s; in Munich. Heisenberg's outstanding contribution, for which he won the Nobel Prize at 31, was the formulation of the uncertainty, or indeterminacy principle. It states that there is an ultimate limit on physical measurement or observation in scientific experiments because the very act of measurement changes the behavior of objects under scrutiny. Unlike many of his scientist friends, Heisenberg remained in Germany under the Nazi regime...

Racial Policy. Hereford's troubles began after he became president in September 1974. Unlike his predecessor, Edgar F. Shannon Jr., Hereford refused demands that he renounce his Farmington membership. An internationally known physicist and longtime Virginia professor, Hereford is by no means a racist. By staying in the club and lobbying for admission of blacks, he insisted, he could do more good than by resigning. His argument: "A change in Farmington would help to change the setting in which the university exists. This isn't an ideal community for blacks, but I'm trying to make...

There is one other regular feature: the false advertisement deftly inserted in the middle of commercial breaks. "Hi," says a bright-eyed woman coming into her kitchen, "I'm a nuclear physicist and chairman of consumer affairs." How does she do it? "She takes speed." A young man playing tennis says: "Right now I'm having a vasectomy." How does he do it? Golden Needles Voodoo Acupuncture-for those who don't have the time or money for costly operations. The put-ons have been too successful. The Gay Activists Alliance is mad at an ad that...

...things in life are more attractive than an open hearth fire-or less efficient. It is messy, requires continual attention, and sends perhaps as much as 90% of its heat up the chimney with the smoke. Most homeowners learn to live with such flaws. Lawrence Cranberg, an Austin, Tex., physicist went back to basic physics to correct them. He has designed a fireplace grate that forces a fire not only to burn better but to send more of its heat out into the room...
