...Sexy Thing), we have a new score by David Yazbek, whose lyrics ("cojones" rhymed with "what testosterone is") are marginally better than his generic, '70s-pop-with-a-hint-of-Sondheim music. Even the supposed showstoppers--a black man (Andre DeShields) sings of his endowments; a crusty pianist (Kathleen Freeman) celebrates her show-biz past--seem earthbound and underchoreographed...
...associated with Rollins' other Caribbean interpretations. Rollins digs marginally further into his improvisatory bag on the two other originals, the funk-infused "Did You See Harold Vick?" and the slow blues "Charles M." to greater effect. Just as in his live performances, the standout sideman on this album is pianist Stephen Scott. The vibrancy of Scott's solos safeguard the moderate pace of the album from becoming sluggish. He also played french horn on the great Miles Davis/Gil Evans albums, Birth of the Cool (1950) and Porgy and Bess...
Murray Perahia's new recording on Sony Classical displays the pianist's careful and deeply intelligent approach to the keyboard. Taking all repeats and avoiding the extroverted, almost maniacal approach that made eccentric Candian pianist Glenn Gould so famous, Perahia is still able to capture our attention with his wonderful tone. The only downside is that some of his embellishments during repeats sound a bit rehearsed. One sometimes wants to hear more of a free approach, especially in the sections where inegal playing is necessary to the style of the variation. However, Perahia has obviously studied the score with great...
...that the New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall was not sold out that Thursday night. With 45 years of performance experience behind it, the Beaux Arts Trio showed once again why it has continued to be perhaps the world's most acclaimed piano trio. The trio's current members-pianist Menahem Pressler, violinist Young Uck Kim and cellist Antonio Meneses-dazzled a polished audience composed mostly of middle-aged Boston society and a sprinkling of the conservatory's students...
