Died. Erroll Garner, 53, jazz pianist and composer (Misty); of a heart attack; in Los Angeles. Garner taught himself to play the piano when he was a child, but he never learned to read or write music. The musicians' union in his native Pittsburgh refused him membership in the 1940s because of this illiteracy, so Garner journeyed to New York City's famed 52nd Street to play in its jazz clubs.
