Years of practice haven't brought Edouard Choiseul (Jean Rochefort), a professional pianist, closer to perfecting the one art that is his true passion -- womanizing. As his ex-wife (Annie Girardot) explains to him, he has slept with his wife's best friends and his best friends' wives and no one trusts him any longer. At first a farcial, light-hearted portrayal of an over extended, frantic womanizer, the film becomes a dramatic, often poignant probing of Edouard's moral and psychological dilemma...

Through the five songs that follow, looking into the dancers, for some hold-outs who are no longer around, and cynically at himself in relation to holding out, Browne builds up to the expected finale. "Hold On Hold Out," the result of a collaboration with pianist Craig Doege, urges Browne's omnipresent You to keep holding out. As all rises in a mightily orchestrated (or engineered) crescendo, the lyric breaks into a prosaic, namby-pamby identification of Browne himself as a hold-out too, wanting to fly. But just as the cyclamates reach the carcinogenic threshold...

...been Kermit Moore (b. 1929), an active concertizer throughout the country as well as in Europe, Africa and the Far East. His recent recording contains the New England Suite by Vally Weigl (b. 1894), widow of the composer Karl Weigl. Moore collaborates here with clarinettist Stanley Drucker and pianist Ilse Sass in a work of modest charm, consisting of "Vermont Nocturne," "Maine Interlude," "Berkshire Pastorale," and "Connecticut Country Fair" (better luck next time, Rhode Island). Moore plays almost perfectly, though the work makes no inordinate demands on its performers...
