This is one of MGM's English Specials, and the studio's British stable (Dame May Whitty, Reginald Owen, Rhys Williams), accomplished actors all, help it out a good deal. Walter Pidgeon is not very happily cast as Sabre, but he succeeds in making a solid character of him. Britain's Deborah Kerr by now seems thoroughly at home in Hollywood, both as a beauty and an actress; but she is wasted in such a role. Angela Lansbury does a good, straight job in her "unpleasant" role. Janet Leigh deserves much better parts...

This year Hollywood plans to reissue at least 68 pictures, twice as many as last year. Moviegoers are already seeing, or will see, Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford in The Women (1939), Walter Pidgeon in How Green Was My Valley (1941), Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart in Destry Rides Again (1939), Ingrid Bergman and Leslie Howard in Intermezzo (1939) and Paul Muni in Scarface...

...studios are concentrating on "cheap" million-dollar pictures. Costs are being cut, shooting schedules reduced. Metro's If Winter Comes (Deborah Kerr and Walter Pidgeon), which would normally have taken 70 days to shoot, has been finished after only 57. Fox canceled the expensive costume piece, The Black Rose, and plans to bear down on the Louis de Rochemont type of "realism," shot on location. Universal-International dropped Song of Norway, which would have been a big draw on the foreign markets. Expensive musicals generally are giving way to cheap, lucrative little comedies about domestic love...
