Three months ago all unbeknownst to themselves three little pigs turned song-pluggers. Their behavior was revolutionary so far as the song industry was concerned. Song-plugging had been left before to such shrewd and experienced performers as Rudy Vallée, Al Jolson, Helen Morgan. The three little pigs were neither shrewd nor experienced. They were pink and new-looking with pudgy behinds and ridiculous tails. Two were so imprudent that they built their houses of straws and sticks, fiddled and danced and tootled on the flute all day, mocking their serious pig-brother who built a brick house...
Desiring to raise farm income by reducing the pig population of the U. S. (TIME, Aug. 28), the Farm Administration announced a month ago that it would buy 4, 000,000 young pigs and 1,000,000 farrowing sows at a premium ($9.50 per 100 lb. for 25-pounders down to $6 on 100-pounders, and $4 a head flat on farrowing sows). Farmers expecting better hog prices next year cannily held back their farrowing sows, sold the Government only 200,000 up to last week. But so eager were farmers to be rid of young hogs that shipments poured...
...charges and the family revives its punch-drunk fortunes in the stockmarket. Characters: the raucous, cynical daughter (Claire Carleton), the daughter in love (Nancy Sheridan), the lazy, acquisitive son (David Morris), the shrewd, big-hearted mother incapable of discipline (Helen Lowell), the speculating uncle, the unsuccessful suitor who makes pig faces to register loutishness, the stereotyped count and the rich, disapproving aunt. Weighed down with stock characters, a stale plot and mechanical lines, Come Easy made its mild zoo of feckless people easily believable. Director Miele kept bouncing her characters into spontaneity, accented their brash selfishness, their reluctant and shamefaced...
...daily fluctuations, but also forbidden (by a rule good until Aug. 15) to fall below their July 31 closing levels, floundered ineffectually. September wheat meandered between a top of $1.02 and the stated minimum, 92⅛?. September corn wandered between 57? and its stated minimum, 49⅜?. September pig bellies swelled up occasionally to $7 but flopped back on their minimum, $6.50. From similar listlessness, begotten partly by regulation, Manhattan's Stock Exchange was saved by outside stimulants. Following pricking of the speculative bubble three weeks ago, the Senate's busy Prosecutor Ferdinand Pecora called on Exchange President...
...Empress belongs not to that eminent and bulldoggish publisher, Lord Tilbury but to Clarence, the sleepy and pig-mad Earl of Emsworth, whose brother. Hon. Galahad Threepwood, has written and suppressed a book of racy reminiscences which Lord Tilbury yearns to publish, and whose Empress has lately been nobbled (kidnapped) and is by way of being nobbled again. Which is why Lord Tilbury is seized by his beefy scruff and thrust into a dark and dirty shed. And why young Monty Bodkin, his discharged subeditor, regains employment with His Lordship. And why, since the ms. of the racy reminiscences...
