...dangerous drive over the mountains and across deserts. There are intensely perceived set pieces: a dog battling a possum; a woman reassembling a carburetor with Zen-like grace; a Snopesian funeral in a field littered with rusty tractor parts and dominated by the sight and smell of a huge pig roasting on a spit...

...juggling scene in The Jerk, the first movie in which Martin has starred, and although it is a direct cinematic translation of the record album sketch, it does not work very well. The kittens used by the juggler (a gent listed in the credits as Pig Eye Jackson) seem pretty confused, and they don't do much except twist a little in the air. Martin expresses his ambivalent disgust, but since he helped write the screenplay, and since real kittens, no doubt much confused, must have been used to film the sequence, the moviegoer feels somewhat ambivalent himself...

Elephants stand around remembering "the Alamo," "the Maine," "Pearl Harbor" and a toga-clad pig solemnly inscribes a scroll under a sign that says...

Anthropomorphism is Lobel's strength: all of his creatures appear to be good-natured humans in animal suits. In Tales of Oliver Pig (Dial; $5.89) he illustrates Jean Van Leeuwen's prose with a family of pigs whose siblings squabble, whose mother has bouts of sadness and whose father can be arbitrary as well as forgiving. A bit hamhanded, but certain to be hogged by parents and children who know why Aesop told human truths with a cast of animals...
