...Another is that Brokeback is one of those movies whose word-of-mouth makes a lot of people reluctant to see it. And not just right-wing commentators. The notion of a couple of cowpokes playing the two-backed beast is too... icky for some folks. Not that the pileup of animosities and implausibilities in Crash is easy to take, but that movie?s excesses got audiences, whether they liked it or hated it, talking far into the night. That gave the film the patina of Importance, another preferred word around Oscar time. Is Crash provocative, reckless, incendiary? So were...

...film's title announces its intentions. It's a collision, an L.A. pileup, of people and prejudices. The dozen-plus major characters include cops, thugs, politicians, strugglers and stragglers, the rich and the poor of all ethnicities--the melting pot that bubbles over in the film's schematic, 36-hour story line. The viewpoint is Manichaean--black and white, if you will--but with a twist. Haggis says not that there are good people and bad people, but that we are all capable of being both. A racist cop (Oscar nominee Matt Dillon) can rudely grope a terrified black woman...

...Mode. Your task here is to speed kamikaze-like into a series of major intersections and create enough dollars' worth of auto carnage to merit a bronze, silver or gold medal. Time slows down at the moment of impact, and you can keep steering your careering car for maximum pileup potential. Sounds simple, but you will be surprised how often you get to the other side having caused little more than dented fenders. Never knew crashing your car could be fun? One test drive, and you will be a believer...

...jumps like an antsy first-grader from one plot strand to the next. Neither film, despite what you might have heard, is within shouting distance of a masterpiece. Gonzalez Inarritu's English-language debut lacks the zigzagging drive of his Mexican hit Amores Perros and taxes credulity with its pileup of fatal coincidences. Mystic River has a case of wandering accents (sometimes South Boston, sometimes West Hollywood) and plods toward its conclusion more like a tired cop than a cunning detective. Its sharpest characters are the soft, doomed Dave, in a beautifully modulated turn by Robbins, and Jimmy's wife...

...Ford Motor Co., last year's Firestone-tire crisis created a legal pileup that could wreck the company's consumer-centric strategy. Ford still faces hundreds of lawsuits that seek damages totaling at least $590 million on behalf of the victims of rollovers of Firestone-equipped sport-utility vehicles, most of which involved the wildly popular Ford Explorer. According to federal data, 174 people have died and more than 700 have been injured in accidents stemming from tread separations and other problems linked to the 6.5 million 15-in. SUV tires that Firestone recalled last August...
