...only three days ago, Orion Jenks has missed all that bonding. Now he is preparing for his maiden trip outside the wire. Yesterday Jenks spent Thanksgiving away from home for the first time, eating rubbery turkey with a bunch of strangers in a chow hall decorated with the corny Pilgrim motif of a kindergarten. The battalion required all soldiers at the base to speak to their families for five minutes on the phone, but the call only added to Jenks' longing for home. "I was hating life," he says...

...opinion of New York State attorney general Eliot Spitzer, Pilgrim Baxter & Associates can claim the title of Most Egregiously Corrupt among the growing list of mutual funds under investigation. "Here you had the founders themselves manipulating the system," Spitzer told TIME. "There's an extra level of insidiousness to it." Complaints filed last week by Spitzer and the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Gary Pilgrim and Harold Baxter with civil fraud. They are accused of allowing an outside hedge fund (in which Pilgrim held a major stake) to make rapid trades in Pilgrim Baxter funds, a practice forbidden...

...move into “the forest.” Granted, I haven’t spent much time in the New England forest, but I didn’t recall it having wall-to-wall carpet. We assemble, strollers and all, in front of a tableau of Pilgrim girls dancing devilishly in the woods. Except that they’re not moving. At all. They’re made of wax. Strange recorded laughter echoes from a visible boom box as the wax statues cavort as best they can in their stationary manner. After a reverent two seconds...

...some reason, in pitch darkness. “Now careful,” she says with a cheer usually reserved for road-company musicals, “they may accuse you of being a witch!” These accusations turn out to be represented by a single Pilgrim with an animatronic hand that swings jerkily on her plastic wrist. The Salem witch trials were paranoia at its most fierce. Now they’re represented by an ill-made plastic finger bobbing up and down...
