...Cavemen? The pilot is much more broad than the ads--there are several club-wielding jokes--and it leans heavily on one gag, the caveman as metaphor for real-life minorities. But it's a funny, hard-hitting gag. A news report about a robbery includes a police sketch of the suspect--a hairy, generic australopithecine; the three cavemen buddies argue the merits of using the slur "Cro-magger." ("It's O.K. when we say it.") The show has potential, but the characters actually seem flatter in the 30-min. pilot than in the 30-sec. spots...
...overall legislation would expand energy efficiency and renewable fuel incentives, end many tax breaks for oil and gas companies, increase the mandate on biofuels (such as ethanol made from corn and soybeans) from 6 billion to 36 billion gallons, authorize a carbon sequestration pilot project (which would trap carbon emissions underground) and make price gouging on oil and gas a federal crime. Ironically, it was meant to be the easy one of the two planned global warming bills. The second, expected later this summer, would set a cap on and establish reduction timetables for carbon emissions...
...Road next year. In FX's drama The Riches--about a con artist who moves to a gated community and passes himself off as a real estate lawyer--the buying and selling of land comes to stand for American dreams, appetites and origins. Creator Dmitry Lipkin says the pilot was shot in an exurb 40 minutes from New Orleans. "Everything around it was swampland," he recalls, "and in the middle of it was this very orderly chunk of land carved out for development." The setting, he says, captured the "quintessentially American" situation of building wealth out of nothing, imposing civilized...
...increased demand for corporate jets has also brought a need for more pilot training. By some estimates up to 20,000 new pilots for both corporate and commercial jets are needed globally each year to account for a disruption in the supply chain that occurred over the last five years. CAE provides training to pilots at 24 training centers worldwide, four of which are devoted exclusively to business-jet training. One such facility, the SimuFlite North East Training Center, opened last week in Whippany, N.J., and has six flight simulators for training on models from the Gulfstream...
Almost a hundred rooms in Dunster will also receive new space-saving furniture this summer, including raised beds, dressers that fit underneath the beds, and narrower desks that may have built-in bookcase space on top. If the furniture pilot program is deemed a success, administrators say other Houses may be refurnished as well...
