Usage:

Most famous human fossil discovered in England is the Piltdown skull, picked up as a succession of fragments in Sussex gravel by Charles Dawson between 1912 and 1914. Piltdown was placed in a separate genus (Eoanthropus) of the human family, of which Homo sapiens is only a species; he was considered to be 100,000 to 300,000 years old. Not long ago a London dentist and amateur archeologist named Alvan T. Marston found in gravel at Swanscombe, Kent some human skull fragments which he thought to be of antiquity comparable with the Piltdown skull (TIME, Oct. 12, 1936). Academic...

...does so frequently and the book is for the most part a collection of such talks delivered during the past several years. Other chapters are essays originally printed in magazines. Some of the material is straightforward anthropological exposition: descriptions of such famed forerunners of Homo sapiens as Peking Man, Piltdown Man and Pithecanthropus erectus, and of the confused state of anthropological opinion about them...

...adapted by A. E. Thomas from a Don Marquis play, Good Old Soak is a minor vehicle for Actor Beery's Piltdown pathos and the efforts of a supporting cast which somehow seem even below MGM's post-Thalberg standard. Typical shot: Beery rubbing his nose...

Again, the typical British attitude toward Pithecanthropus erectus is perhaps a full recognition of human status and anatomical integrity, with some imperialistic suspicion that he belongs to an inferior species, while the Piltdown lady is at least a complete female and, apelike jaw and all, a possible progenitor of Homo sapiens. . . . However, it seems to me that the most outstanding characteristic of British anthropology is the essentially sporting atti tude taken by scientists toward the discovery and acceptance of new finds, which...

...year 1936 has been a boom year in fossil anthropology. A quarry blast in South Africa turned up an adult skull of the same genus as the immature fossil Australopithecus found in 1924. A brain case discovered in England appeared to be older than Piltdown Man. A cranial piece dug out of a California creek, though probably not much more than 30,000 years old, looked like the oldest human relic ever found in the U. S. (TIME, Oct. 12 et seq.). Few weeks ago from the cave at Chou-Kou-Tien, whence the famed pair of skulls belonging...
