...Midler has come a long way since she was the gay guys' pin-up girl at the Continental Baths in Manhattan. She's 62 now, and her fans have matured with her. "Thirty years ago my audiences were on drugs," she confides. "Now they're on medication." Frequently she complains that she hasn't got the old energy. "Omigod I'm exhausted!" she apostrophizes after her very first number - adding, in re certain pop-star lip-synchers who've played the Strip, "That's what happens when you do your own songs...

...Spillane obsession with spectacularly cantilevered women finds its modern expression in the gargantuan, silicon-sweetened contours of Pamela Anderson and her pin-up siblings. As for Spillane's attention to the particulars of violence, it has pretty much taken over action films, including the most ambitious ones. It's in the acrobattles of Sin City and the blood-love of Quentin Tarantino. Hype Williams, known for his work on the film “Belly,” (which runs like an exceedingly long music video), really captures Kanye’s overstated elegance. Pin-up girls and West’s violent gyrations careen around powerful background colors, beautiful women, and some genuinely nice shots of Jamie Foxx (see left for an example). It won’t stay with you forever, but it also won’t leave you feeling like...

...little personality makes watching her adventures a fairly empty exercise—except, of course, for her aesthetic contribution. Banderas’ Alejandro serves more or less the same purpose; unless you’re looking for lessons in overacting, watching this movie is no better than buying a pin-up. If the film stumbles with its main characters, it crashes to the ground with its politics. The writers make the villainous archduke’s guild a jingoistic metaphor for “anti-American” Europe. With this society of nations bent on crushing all possible threats...
