...there seemed little doubt that Del Pino was a genuine Cuban air hero. Born 48 years ago in Pinar del Rio province, where his father owned several movie theaters, Del Pino as a teenager attended Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy in Seymour, Tenn., then returned to Cuba. At 14, he was arrested for demonstrating against Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. In the late 1950s, he joined Castro's revolutionaries...
...Castro comrade who left Cuba years ago in anger over Moscow's increasing influence, the incident occurred Oct. 27, 1962, at the height of the U.S.Soviet confrontation over the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba. On that day, the Cuban President was visiting a Soviet missile base in Pinar del Rio, southwest of Havana. When a U-2 appeared on the base's radar, Castro asked the Soviets how to shoot down an attacking plane. The officers obligingly showed him the button that would fire off an SA-2 ground-to-air missile. Suddenly, Castro pushed the button...
...arrival in Miami, one of the former prisoners in Cuba, Lawrence Lunt, 56, of Saratoga, Wyo., readily admitted that he had been spying for the CIA from his ranch in Pinar del Rio province before his arrest in 1965. Juan Tur, 62, of Tampa would only shrug his shoulders when asked by reporters for an explanation of his antigovernment activities in Cuba. The third prisoner, Everett Jackson, 39, of Los Angeles, insisted that he had been operating as a freelance journalist when he parachuted from a plane into Cuba in an attempt to photograph Soviet missile silos...

I lived in Cuba in that year of 1956, and people in Colon and Pinar de Rio didn't even seem to be sharing in that $520. Venezucla's per-capital income is even higher-$800; any visitor to Caracas who has seen the miles of mud-built slums knows that per-capital income, as applied to Latin America, is pure poppycock...
