...other work, scientists at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research isolated frontalin, a pheromone released by the female western pine beetle to attract other beetles when it finds a tree suitable for feeding and nesting. They also isolated verbenome, a pheromone given off by the males to stop the influx of beetles to the tree after the proper balance of males and females is achieved.
