Last week the Rehn Galleries hung a fresh collection of Carroll's diaphanous, warm, pink nudes, glinting pickaninny-like Negresses, superbly deft drawings. Done with less delicacy and more fire than usual were Blacksmith, a composition reminiscent of Franklin Watkins, and Deep Down Blue, a black girl rolling her eyeballs in a voodoo dance. Biggest & best designed picture: Summer Afternoon (see cut), a wispy girl putting...

A massive man, he paced the boards in an opéra bouffe of the 90s wearing a gargantuan pink ballet skirt edged with pompons, roaring out feminine lines in full bass. So thoroughly did he delight the fun-loving citizens of Sydney, they gave him an indigenous and characteristic present: a robe made from 80 pelts of the weird duckbill, or platypus. There seems to have been none like it before or since...

Almost immediately the artist, 26-year-old, blonde Suzanne Eisendieck, became a ward of the Leicester Galleries, and a story straight out of La Vie de Boheme turned toward...
