...though, this emotional barrage can be tiresome. Radford gives us endless scenes of Winston standing on a lusciously green hillside, symbolizing his longing for an ideal world. This repetition seems out of character with the action pace of the film: more at home with the bogus psychological exploitation of Pink Floyd's The Wall than Orwell. Especially pretentious is the final shot of this sequence, where we learn that this mythical "Green Acres" lies in Rm, 101, the room of everyone's worst fear. Mixing symbols like this might work for a Bergman, but it has failed almost everybody else...

Before her hypnosis dance ends 15 more dancers join her. Against sets of changing colors--hot pink to floaresent green to bright orange--three groups of dancers move to the rapid beating. Each group does rib, hip and arm isolations in sequence. They continue to dance in cycles--spending to the floor contracting, relaxing and leaping. Constructing this elaborate seenario takes the first Third of the film, and it is a pleasure to watch. If director towards learned anything from his Pink Panther films it was how to set up a really big gag, and make the audience enjoy watching the pieces fall into place until the film blows up. In this case, the gag is the inevitable simultaneous birth of Rob's two children--at the same hospital--and it meets every expectation. Unfortunately, the madcap scene at the hospital and its aftermath only occupies the last third of the film, leaving a yawning nine...
