...Cubans with a strong love for their countrymen and a burning hate for tinhorn dictators with rich American friends tried unsuccessfully to capture the barracks in an attempt to spark an insurrection which they though would topple Batista's government. There is a huge school now in the long, pink building with seventeen-year-old bullet holes still pock-marking its walls. That day the fourth-graders had filled a bulletin board with a photo exhibit of Vietnamese children. A few pictures showed kids staring blankly at the camera, their flesh grotesquely disfigured by Dow's napalm, but most...

...among them Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb. Avery and friends sketched frequently at each other's homes. Seated Blonde resulted from one such session in 1946, when the model turned out to be a strapping 6-ft. beauty named Stella, daughter of that week's host. Avery combined pink with burnt sienna, magenta and crimson, with all the jangling dissonance of half a dozen crashing cymbals. ...TALL, beautiful woman stands before you. With a spot of rouge upon her olive-skinned forehead, she wears a long, pink sari that swirls to her toes. A wreath of many-colored roses envelops her, and a deep-blue pheasant nestles at her feet. Too bad: the woman and her creature are merely a painting on a wall...

At Yundum's terminal, things get hectic, for the building is only 40 feet by 20 feet. Still, officials of Gambia Airways (which has clerks and baggage handlers but flies no aircraft) cope magnificently. Once tucked into one of Gambia's three hotels, the tourists head for the beaches...

Cape Kennedy has suffered the most from the slowdown in the space program. Employment has dropped from 24,000 a year ago to 17,500 today, and "pink-slip psychology" lends a frantic tone to Friday night parties at the local Hilton. Houses that sold for $25,000 a year ago now bring $1,500 less. Space contractors organized an employment service and invited more than 100 organizations-life insurance companies, boat builders, even the CIA-to interview laid-off employees. They found 600 jobs for 2,000 men. One $15,000-a-year engineer wound up packing groceries...
