...Scripture or tradition. At the synod the president of the U.S. bishops, James W. Malone of Youngstown, Ohio, expects to defend the conferences and their pastoral and social involvement. Malone got a boost at last week's meeting of the American hierarchy in Washington, D.C., when Papal Pro-Nuncio Pio Laghi praised the U.S. bishops' conference and its pastoral letters on nuclear disarmament and economic morality for "offering the service of leadership on public issues." Malone said last week that he will also press in Rome for "new initiatives" on ecumenism...
...camera - a security requirement. That left the three judges looking for other possible signs of sincerity in the man who says he decided to turn state's evidence two months after his April arrest because of Pope John Paul II's canonization of his religious idol, Padre Pio. While most took the religious confession with a grain of salt, some may have seen contrition in the video image of Giuffrè's slightly slouched posture, or anxiety in his constant twirling and clicking of a ballpoint pen. ...such spot could be found in the canvases of Gerhard Richter, a German artist who lives and works in Cologne. Following a classical precedent, Richter was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the Cathedral of Padre Pio in Foggia, Italy. Members of the Nock family (their performance roots date back to the 18th century in Switzerland) have been circus artists and great clowns for generations. I saw Bello's uncle Pio Nock in the Ringling show when I was 22, and I applied immediately to the Ringling Bros. Clown College. Bello's thoroughly American accent--he speaks many languages, but all of them like a guy from Florida, which he is--doesn't mask his European take...
...actuality the Vatican has exhumed far more than just a venerable body. "I am appalled that the Catholic Church wants to make a saint out of a Pope who perpetuated...an act of unacceptable intolerance," declared a professor named Elena Mortara in Rome. Pio Nono, it turns out, had a Jewish problem of his own. Mortara is the great-grandniece of Edgardo Mortara, who was taken from his Jewish parents at age six in 1858 by the papal police and raised--in part by Pius himself--as a Catholic. The incident typified Pius' ham-fisted treatment of the Jews...
