When he first settled in the U.S. in 1923, he was hailed by the critics as "the greatest sculptor since Rodin." The fact was that he loathed Rodin. "Since photography," he said, "representation is unnecessary." His sculpto-paintings-many-colored shapes arranged, friezelike, upon a flat plane -were pioneer constructions. He boldly used glass, wood, clay, metal or mother-of-pearl to achieve new effects, often allowing the materials to shape their own destinies, much as today's abstractionists let their work grow out of itself. Long before the younger Henry Moore, he gouged holes in his sculpture...

...ridge overlooking Murnau, near Munich, speaks by its appearance of suffering and sorrow. The fence sags wearily, and the path leading to the front door last week lay buried under a foot-high pile of dead leaves. Yet the house is famous. It was purchased by the pioneer abstractionist Wassily Kandinsky and his onetime mistress, Gabriele Münter, in 1908. There, at the age of 84, Gabriele Münter still lives, an artist who is steadily gaining fame in her own right as one of the best of the German expressionists...

Although Thelonius Monk was a significant creator in the new jazz of the '40's, he reached real maturity in about 1957 with the Brilliant Corners LP on Riverside (12-226). Monk was a pioneer in the controlled use of space in his writing and playing, and his tonal practices are totally original. He is also one of the great wits of jazz. Try one of the several records on which he appears as a solo pianist. Cecil Taylor occupies the position of enfant terrible of the piano which Monk once held. His music--sometimes only peripherally music--consists largely...

...tissue culture method devised by Enders and his associates led to the modern progress in virology. If others are to be singled out for their contributions, I would nominate at least one more man-Dr. Thomas M. Rivers, formerly with the Rockefeller Institute and one of our great pioneer virologists. His leadership in the field has been recognized all over the world. As chairman of the advisory committee on virus research of the National Foundation-March of Dimes and later the Foundation's vice president for medical affairs, he helped institute and carry out a research grant policy that...

...Pioneer Spirit. One aspect of the frontier tradition that Texans keep alive, says Bainbridge, is the cheapness of life. More people are killed in Texas traffic accidents than in any other state except California, which has about 40% higher population. Perhaps, Bainbridge suggests, it's all the result of the old pioneer spirit. "Texans behind the wheel tend to excel by far all other Americans in aggressiveness, perhaps in this respect outclassing even the Germans. Courtesy can be expected on the splendid Texas highway system only from the lily-livered...
