...pious patriotism of the Argentines, reflected in such current stories from the front, is hardly restricted to the military. Father Agustin Luchia Puig, editor of the Roman Catholic magazine Esquiú (named after a 19th century Argentine bishop), declared that "all Argentines, in church and out, believe our cause is just. I think that the good God is content with this faith of ours." One of the country's notably progressive prelates, Archbishop Vicente Faustino Zazpe of Santa Fe, in northern Argentina, last week assailed "the treason of the United States" and the "hopeless hysteria of England," singling...

There is not a false note in Short Shorts. The contents-38 fictions-range back to Leo Tolstoy's The Three Hermits, whose pious innocents forget a prayer and run on top of the ocean to find their condescending teacher. The most recent are powerful condensations of modern life by Heinrich Boll, who describes a professional laugher producing merriment on cue for everyone but himself, and Paula Fox, whose News from the World describes a woman and her contaminated seaside village withering for lack of love. Between these terminals, Chekhov, Kafka, Mishima, Hemingway, Borges and a score of other...

Abscam has led to the conviction on corruption charges of 16 persons, including seven members of Congress and one senator. All of them, despite abundant and expensive legal counsel, have failed to prove they were entrapped. His pious rambling on the Senate floor notwithstanding. Harrison A. Williams remained a man convicted on nine counts of bribery, conspiracy, receiving an unlawful gratuity, contact of interest and interstate travel in aid of racketeering. To waste time and sympathy on crooks and bums like Williams opens liberal up to charges of caring only about their own and undermines the effectiveness of the government...

Isarah, whose pious exhortation to the Jews to "Learn to do good, search for justice, help the oppressed..." prefaced McKibben's piece, also promised his listener that in return for such good behavior, Israel would be set above other nations, and that the others, "with their faces to the ground they how down to you, and lick the dust of your feet." God's justice is not what we might nowadays call universal...

Politics unfortunately enter the classroom, too. A pious piece appearing in the Independent last year suggested that we "leave our ideological baggage at the door" of fair Harvard. We do not nor do our professors. To many of them, we do not exist. How can you teach a human sexuality course without discussing gay people? How can you teach a course on the Holocaust without mentioning the deaths of at least 250,000 gays? But professors do. They fail us, and non-gays too, not deliberately, but through a lack of awareness...
