...neighborhood. Everyone blamed the dearth of fresh bread on the government's over-generous aid to the Shi`ites of Lebanon, displaced in the recent fighting between Israel and Hizballah. I should point out that my neighborhood is split between religious and secular families, and that the most pious of the bread-deprived were just as quick to shake their heads with resentment. No one said "let them eat cake," but it came pretty close...

...that all pious Muslims are fans. Yvonne Ridley, a British reporter who was kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan and became a radical Muslim convert upon her release, recently lambasted Yusuf for "poisoning the masses" by encouraging "excessive behavior which demeans Islam." In her view, Yusuf's call for East-West coexistence is a "pipe dream." Yet the need for cross-cultural understanding and dialogue is precisely the message Yusuf is bringing on his U.S. tour, and it should get a warm reception. After all, even if his particular brand of religious music may not have a wide enough appeal...

...another. So this has shown the weaknesses of the A.U.? I remember one statement to the United Nations: "It's a family affair, and we will take care of it within the African family." What is the family about? I'm afraid I have very little patience for this pious, traditional way of doing things. In traditional societies you do not accept this level of aggression. Islamic fundamentalism is spreading in Africa. Is that a problem that we can do anything about? It's a universal problem. The answer is partly education and partly the enforcement of laws of secular...

...Streep, in particular, is a marvel - a cheerfully pious woman refusing to admit disappointment and doing her best to divert her adolescent daughter (an excellent Lindsay Lohan) from her addiction to writing suicidal poetry. It seems to me that she, alone of the cast, has the true Keillorian spirit, which is simply to use a kind of perpetual perkiness to elbow aside the surrounding dread (or at least darkness). I'm guessing, of course, but I suspect that's a spirit that she found in herself, that it's not something Altman coaxed out of her. There's no evidence...
