...hard to imagine electric cars solving the serious pollution problems in China or in electricity-starved Africa. More than 90% of China's power comes from overstretched coal-burning stations. "You could end up substituting CO2 emissions from a tail pipe with CO2 emissions from a power station," says Morsing. "If you cannot produce alternative energy, the whole idea of electric cars falls apart." In the end, governments will have to decide what is more urgent: cutting imports from the Middle East or cleaning up the planet...

True to her campaign pledge, Palin had her gas team draft a pipeline plan that set tough conditions on whoever would build the line. One of the "must-haves," as they were called, required the builder to allow other producers to use the pipe, even if that meant expanding it at the builder's expense. That was a nonstarter with the big producers, who didn't even put in bids. In the end, the only acceptable offer came from TransCanada, an independent Canadian pipeline builder...

On August 18, Wakanoho was arrested, and a search of his residence turned up a marijuana pipe. The sumo fraternity was scandalized by the first-ever arrest of one of its high-ranking number, and the 20-year-old Russian was banned for life from the sport...

In the hallway an unmistakable Bridget Riley - all colorful zigzag brickwork - is juxtaposed with rows of leather slippers and mirrors, which immediately lend the painting a Moroccan edge. A stunning light sculpture inspired by a hookah pipe and crafted out of meter-long handblown glass vessels by New Zealander Francis Upritchard vies for attention with small studies in carbon and casein donated by sculptor Antony Gormley after he stayed at the hotel. And there's a big decorative abstract by Terry Frost in the cosy bar. Some...
