...strong supporting roles in The Green Mile, Matchstick Man, Snow Angels and the Brad Pitt Jesse James movie, and starring as Chuck Barris in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Rockwell has honed his specialty of runty ranters. His standard character is the kind of highly caffeinated punk who, in any group, would be voted most likely to screw up the mission. He brings some of that chip-on-shoulder orneriness to Moon - at times you wonder how Sam aced the screening process and got the job - and to the second Sam, a Top Gun-type who fulminates while the first...
...experience "intense, sad and exciting." If not the best performance of the festival, Gainsbourg's was surely of the self-punishing kind that could be appreciated by jury members Huppert, Asia Argento and Shu Qi, all of whom have played similarly extreme roles. Waltz, the suave German on Brad Pitt's tail in Inglourious Basterds, thanked the film's "unique and inimitable creator," Tarantino, because, he said, after 30 years in the business, "You have given me my vocation back." Later, the press asked both actors what they'd think if some of their scenes were cut for international release...
...warscape, an octet of eight rambunctious Jews - most of them American but a couple German - have been set loose with the mission to kill and disfigure the enemy army. "A hundred Nazi scalps each" is the order of the Basterds' leader, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt, chewing heartily on an Ozark accent), who either doesn't make the distinction between German soldiers and Nazis or doesn't care. While the Basterds are giving the Krauts bloody haircuts, Raine takes his pleasure carving swastikas on the foreheads of his favorite prisoners...
...such a large cast, Pitt all but disappears into his mountaineer accent and laconic sadism; the other Basterds are mere war-film window dressing. This conflict is fought mainly between nasty Nazis and resourceful women. In her slinky dresses and fancy footwear (sometimes just one shoe), Kruger is steely glamour incarnate. And Waltz has the purring efficiency of a sleek German vehicle, not a tank but a Mercedes-Benz; he could take Cannes' Best Actor prize on Sunday night. The movie is pretty scrupulously played in the languages its characters would speak - except for one odd moment early on, when...
...always welcome here; last year his two-hour conversation with film critic Michel Ciment filled the 900-seat Debussy theater to overflowing. Inglourious Basterds marks his first competition effort since he copped the Palme d'Or, Cannes' top prize, in 1994 with Pulp Fiction. His war movie, with Pitt leading a squad of Jewish-American soldiers against the Nazis, is the centerpiece selection a week from today. (See pictures of Hitler's rise to power...
