After wiring the country with coaxial cable and falling heavily in debt doing so, cable-television outfits have yet to realize a world in which television, telephones and computers meld into an "interactive TV" that lets viewers order movies or pizza, E-mail the kids' teachers, shop or browse the Internet. Cable still means endless reruns of The Odd Couple, wrestling and infomercials...

...heavyweight advertisers are headed in different directions, including Domino's Pizza, Delta Air Lines, Reebok and the ABC television network. Account changes are rippling at a record pace through the U.S. advertising industry, which handled $52 billion in domestic media billings last year. (Billings measure clients' ad spending, on which agencies take a cut as fees; 15% used to be standard, although the rate varies.) The U.S. Army, beset by sex scandals and an increasingly hard time recruiting new soldiers, is putting its $80 million account--now held by Young & Rubicam--up for review. That couldn't be more fitting...

...crowded out there. Operators of quick-service restaurants (QSRS, in the industry lingo) have been expanding the number of taco stands, pizza parlors and burger joints 6% to 7% annually. Compare that with the increase in available mouths, 1% annually, and the equation becomes clearer: the only way to grow business is to bite off a piece of the other guy's sales...

...pickup service, but my advice is, do the things yourself. The generation that runs the country now grew up leaving trash in the streets for others to haul away. If you take care of your own mess, you'll be surprised how clean you'll feel. Use Tide on pizza stains...
