...Rich Smyth, head of redevelopment for JetBlue, the terminal is located in a 78-acre corner of Kennedy airport, a swath large enough to allow for the optimal "placing of aluminum" - industry slang for maneuvering airplanes. There are double taxiing lanes feeding into the terminal's gates, enabling arriving planes to approach jetways without waiting for departing planes to clear the path. Architects installed cleaning-supply closets at the gates to assist flight crews in maintaining a fast 30-minute plane turnaround time, and JetBlue hopes that each gate will turn over 10 flights daily, compared with an average three...
...school or factory shifts. Weightlifting, in particular, may be one of the Olympics' most fundamental pursuits, but it is not the kind of sport that lures big-name advertisers. Even though Thailand's weightlifting team won four medals at the Athens Olympics four years ago, most Thais on the plane up from Bangkok seemed to have no idea there were medal favorites sitting near them...
...Wandee Kameaim, an Athens bronze medalist in the 53-kg class and anchor of this year's Olympic squad. Even though I live in Thailand and am covering the Olympics, I admit I had to Google her name to identify her as the woman on the plane. (I also had to Google another Thai weightlifter, but that was because I was not entirely sure of the spelling of Prapawadee Charoenrattanatharakul, whose surname is also written Jaroenrattanatarakoon). The history of Thai women's weightlifting is short but impressive. The kingdom's first-ever female gold medalist was a weightlifter...

With The Gulag Archipelago Solzhenitsyn had become too great for the Soviet government. After years of harassment he was put on a plane and expelled from Russia...
...there's an excuse here. Weather in Greenland is changeable, and even in the summer, hardly perfect for flying. It's not unusual for flights to be delayed for hours, even canceled altogether, sometimes stranding people on the ice cap for days at a time. We were lucky - our plane did depart, and landed safely at NEEM some two-and-a-half hours later. There's no paved runway on the ice cap, just a groomed, flat snow path, and the planes don't use landing gear but giant skis. That can make takeoff tricky, if snow has melted...
