...rest of the album, and feels like much more a half-hearted throwback than anything else. Oberst has bought into his own personality cult, and as a result, his homegrown pretensions, once endearing, become unbearable. The first track begins by recounting the story of some victim of a plane crash in his romantic-comedy-awkward style, before launching into the song itself. Oberst gets the point across with characteristic subtlety: he’s a storyteller, dammit...

...knew many Republicans in Congress, as well as many utility-industry leaders, had voiced opposition to the President's promise on carbon dioxide. So on the plane home, I wrote a memo to the President summarizing the trip. "I would strongly recommend that you continue to recognize that global warming is a real and serious issue. While not specifically endorsing the targets called for in Kyoto, you could indicate that you are exploring how to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions internally and will continue to do so no matter what else transpires." Unfortunately, as I was to learn later, before I had even boarded the plane to come home, an effort was being launched to persuade the President to reverse himself. Before I had left for Italy, the White House office of legislative affairs had started to hear complaints about statements I had made regarding the President's support for a carbon dioxide emissions cap, and the Administration had begun a review of the campaign promise. Once I repeated those statements at the G8, those opposing that proposal had shifted into high gear. While I was writing my memo to the President...

...aviation-security community was alarmed recently when the TSA put a pilot on a special watch list for having government-issued ammunition in his bag when he tried to board a plane while off duty. The pilot, who had passed rigorous background checks in order to carry a gun, was subject to being pulled aside for searches and not allowed to work as a pilot. He was taken off the list last week, given a letter of censure and allowed to return to work. Said TSA spokesman Mark Hatfield: "We have a thorough review process, and we came...

Airbus' reaction to the 787, meanwhile, has been baffling. At first, Forgeard was quoted as dismissing Boeing's new plane as a "Chinese copy" of Airbus' similar A330. But last December, Airbus abruptly shifted and said it would build a derivative plane called the A350. Boeing spins the A350 as a sign of lost confidence in the A380. In an interview last month, Boeing's Stonecipher pointed to another European government-backed plane that never made a profit and has been grounded. "The A380 is a great engineering success, but so was the Concorde. The A380 could be a market...
