Implausible? Deane theorizes that Blake was actually a triple agent. After the Korean experience, he surmises, British intelligence asked Blake to "sell out" to the Russians, then plant false information (leavened with bits of sound but less valuable data) in hopes of misleading Moscow or gaining enemy information himself. According to Deane, Blake might well have consented to the 1961 trial to maintain the illusion that British authorities thought he was working for the Kremlin, when in fact he remained a loyal British public servant all the while. Thus Blake's escape from Wormwood Scrubs could have been engineered...
...that the Captain is very worried. The Sun will publish in less populous Suffolk County and make no home deliveries in Nassau, where Newsday is strongest. Guggenheim has even taken Sun Publisher Gardner Cowles III on a tour of the Newsday plant to show him how a successful suburban paper operates. Even so, the Captain has increased his own Suffolk staff and embarked on a $3,000,000 expansion in Nassau that will enable him to enlarge his paper from 160 pages to 192 early next year and boost circulation to as much as 600,000. Last week he announced...
...will top $500,000, and he has already decided how to spend it. "I'm going to have a stable of 40 to 50 young fighters," he says. "I want them from every race and creed, from all over the world." Benbow plans to build a woodworking plant on his ranch; his boxers will spend their days turning out "the finest cabinets a man can buy," do their training evenings. He already has advertised for applicants in The Ring and claims to have received 50,000 responses-including one from a would-be boxer in the South Pacific islands...
Those White House Calls. Brisk demand has given fresh urgency to some projects for new oil sources. Next fall in Alberta, a $240 million plant built by a Sun Oil Co. Canadian subsidiary will begin extracting 45,000 bbl. of oil a day from the Athabasca tar sands, which contain 369 billion bbl. of recoverable oil. Interest is also reviving in Colorado's vast deposits of oil shale. Recently, some producers in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas raised basic crude-qil prices 80 to $3,08 per bbl.-closer to the point at which extraction of oil from shale could...
...spring, the skin comes away with the paper. Yet he has survived, "always knowing that war is not forever and that we live by growing things." Surviving with him are a few sempervivums, or everlivings-among them the European houseleek, sometimes known as "hen and chickens"-a proper plant for this chickenhearted man. Another surviving plant is the Sempervivum melintese, thought extinct for a hundred years and now, like the hero, "resurrected in captivity...
