Flindt's doomsday piece documents the death of a small town-or perhaps the end of the world-to a rather syrupy, amiably melodic pop-rock score by Thomas Koppel. Shrouded in a black plastic mantle, Death stalks, pointing, closing doors, and in general mopping up human fallout from air pollution. In one scene a rich man strips and frantically slathers his body in red disinfectant. The much-vaunted nude orgy takes place in a boutique where women tussle greedily over clothes and jewels. Last week Venice glowed eerily under the chill night sky over Cinecitta studios as Fellini filmed the movie's final scene. On a set as large as a football field (cost: $500,000), the city lay frozen -its Grand Canal solid ice (constructed from sheets of white plastic), the Rialto Bridge sagging under layers of snow. He has officiated at several rites in the machine's inception--for instance, he had to build a "click" into the machine, "so the woman knows the keys are responding," he explains as he walks through the payroll division. It is past...

And the mirrors of those who stood too close doing battle with their blemishes. Plastic spray bottle. And those who left town without flushing. Damn them. "Johnny brush" with plastic bristles. That's just about everything. And thus weighted, the student porter climbs out into the sunlight of the Yard...
