...been his simple wish to walk barefoot on the grass and some day to live normally in the world. For this hope David, 12, and his family took the ultimate gamble: they traded the safety of a germ-free plastic bubble at Houston's Texas Children's Hospital for the slim chance that a bone-marrow transplant would allow the immunologically defenseless boy to live freely. Last week they lost their gamble, and his death was felt across the country...

...works are as schematic as engineering diagrams. Others, including his famous study of two skulls cut across their cranial vaults, are done with an exquisite realism of tone and shading that rivals the most delicate passage in his studies of inanimate nature. Others still, like the wonderfully plastic red chalk drawing of a naked man seen from the back, can hardly be distinguished in aesthetic intention from his figure drawings for paintings. In short, what drawing conveys is never subordinated to style, even in the work of this most consummate of graphic stylists...

The pair trains year round with four two-week European jaunts, warm-weather practice on plastic-matted jumps and such regimens as daily rides on unicycles for balance or diving for form with the University of Vermont swim team. Obscurity is an advantage, Hastings believes. "With the Norwegians, everybody's butt is on the line. We don't have to deal with that...

...Ross did not wait for the Australian to make his next move. Two weeks ago, he struck up a partnership with Chris-Craft Industries that seemed tailor-made to thwart a Murdoch takeover bid. The agreement calls for Chris-Craft, a diversified New York-based manufacturer of boat engines, plastic products and chemicals, with fiscal 1983 revenues of $84.4 million and profits of $3.99 million, to acquire about 25% of Warner's stock. In return, Warner would gain a 42.5% stake in a Chris-Craft subsidiary that owns two television stations and interests in four others...
