...letter from a Mr. Marlowe [Jan. 13] refers to the "peaceful dignity" and "serene beauty" found in the Lutheran and Episcopal churches. If dignity is found in plate-glass windows, why aren't the Protestants holding services in greenhouses? If "serene beauty" means blank walls, there are air-raid shelters. Granted we Catholics occasionally lapse into the tranquilized interiors of modern-style architecture, but when we do, it is only to share the blame Mr. Marlowe claims other religions have total right...

...most formidable ships afloat-a fact soon demonstrated. In little more than an hour the Exeter was wallowing out of action. But the other two cruisers, harrying the enemy like sharks at a whale, managed to hit where it hurt. The German commander (Peter Finch) withdrew into the River Plate, and docked at Montevideo. Prodded by the Allies, neutral Uruguay allowed the Graf Spee less than four days for repairs, and meanwhile the British spread rumors of a large (and largely nonexistent) fleet that had gathered to intercept the raider's escape. The Germans swallowed the bluff; Hitler himself...

...Upper Story is not an art gallery, a coffee house, or a bargain bookstore. Whatever esoteric appeal the gift shop had while situated on an upper story was lost when it moved to a street-level, plate-glass window site on Church Street. According to Mrs. Howe, who runs The Upper Story with her husband, "We're eight years old, actually, and I guess you might say we've grown right along with Harvard Square. We were located on the second floor in that little alleyway where the Coop bookstore is. We were the first of several second floor shops...

Scientists have searched for a means of turning heat directly into electric current since a series of experiments in the 1880s showed that a heated metal plate will "boil off" clouds of electrons. Reason: an electric current is simply a flow of electrons. Last week, before the 124th meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, General Electric announced that it had turned the trick. The device that may change the world's means of making power: a small "thermionic converter" that now turns about 9% of its heat energy into electricity, may eventually convert...

...converter is made of two plates of tungsten that are a fraction of a millimeter apart. Between them is a vapor in near vacuum. The plates are so treated that they have different electric potentials. (G.E. will disclose neither the vapor nor the method of treating the plates.) The plate with the higher potential is heated to about 1,500° centigrade, the other to around 1,000° centigrade. The first plate is hot enough to release electrons; the second is not. Clouds of electrons boil off the hotter plate (the cathode) and are attracted to the cooler plate...
