...killings were shocking enough, but rumors quickly emerged that aggravated the situation--of Hindu women raped on the platform, of girl survivors being carried away. Local leaders of the chauvinistic Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the group planning to rebuild the Ram temple, gave instructions to destroy all Muslims. In Afsana's neighborhood, Naroda, a crowd of 2,000 armed themselves with sticks, stones and bottles of gasoline and went hunting. At least 65 people were killed, their remains left outside their burned homes. After all the Muslims had died or fled, a Hindu mob surrounded the local mosque and started...

DISC THROWING So did you finally go out and buy a DVD player? Well, now a consortium of electronics makers is working on a new, incompatible DVD standard. The platform will play only so-called Blu-ray discs, which are encoded using short-wavelength blue-violet lasers to burn extra-narrow tracks of data. The new discs will hold roughly 27 gigabytes--about five times standard capacity, or enough room for 13 hours of TV shows. Prosperous and with low unemployment, tolerant and proudly multicultural, the country has long been a place where the politicians fine-tune consensus in long, well-behaved coalition talks. But into that idyll last week crashed Pim Fortuyn, 54, who rode an unapologetically anti-immigration platform to a substantial victory in local elections in Rotterdam, the country's second city, where many of the country's 800,000 Muslims live. His local party, Livable Rotterdam, won 17 out of the 45 seats in the municipal council, besting all three of the country's ruling coalition parties...

...Contestants] should always have on a smile, exude a positive attitude, at least seem well-informed on current issues, make eye contact with the judges whenever possible [and] act and seem genuinely concerned and sincere when asked about their platform. Most importantly [they should] be real and not a superficial product of a beauty- and consumer-driven society. Also, since the Miss Harvard pageant is a parody of pageants, a little spice or sass won’t hurt.” (Chavez...
