After Burnett had kicked off, Richardson made twenty yards around Hallowell. Frequent punting made the ball change hands often, Harvard occasionally trying Brown's ends, with little success. Brown finally attempted rushing, but lost the ball for offside play. Failing to gain around Cuddy, Sawin punted on the third down, the ball going outside on Brown's twenty-yard line. Bates returned a low, bounding ball, which Sawin cleverly handled.
