...semi-secret 2001 image revamp put Mickey's logo in trendy places: on celebrities, in a Sex and the City episode - he was printed on a t-shirt and stretched across Sarah Jessica Parker's chest - as well as in high-end boutiques. In 2002, he appeared in the PlayStation2 video game Kingdom Hearts. And in 2006, he became 3-D for the very first time. Now you can see him on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, an early morning Disney Channel show designed for children ages 2-6. Or you can book a flight to Disney World and shake his oversized...

Left unfettered, Anthony Konieczka, 9, would happily thumb away at his Game Boy Advance or PlayStation2 from the minute he gets up to the moment he crawls into bed, 14 bleary-eyed hours later. Anthony's basement in Naperville, Ill., is stocked with traditional toys--board games, puzzles, art supplies--and as far as he's concerned, they're relics of Christmases past. His sister Michaely, 6, still likes dressing her Barbies. "But once she starts playing Game Boy," says their mom Scharmen, "it's hard to get her away...

...violent, amoral and laced with profanity--just like the Boyz N the Hood--era gangsta films to which it pays homage. But what really draws players back to this latest installment (for PlayStation2; $49.99) in the controversial Grand Theft Auto series is just how open-ended it is. Sure, you can take your homies on that drive-by shooting raid on a rival gang, or you can grab a car at random and simply explore the state of San Andreas. The designers at Rockstar have packed the cities of Los Santos and San Fiero (a.k.a. Los Angeles and San Francisco...

Most driving games tend to reward you for steering clear of other drivers. Not the Burnout franchise. You can still race around a track if you want, but where Burnout 3 (for PlayStation2 and Xbox; $49.88) really excels is in Crash Mode. Your task here is to speed kamikaze-like into a series of major intersections and create enough dollars' worth of auto carnage to merit a bronze, silver or gold medal. Time slows down at the moment of impact, and you can keep steering your careering car for maximum pileup potential. Sounds simple, but you will be surprised...
