Kwame Ture was my friend for 40 years. The thing that touched me most about him was that he loved his black people. He was deeply committed to their plight and worked all his 57 years to improve conditions for African Americans. One of his greatest contributions was the 1966 wake-up call to black Americans, saying that they are "a mighty people" who can and must determine and define their own destiny. As young men, Kwame--then known as Stokely Carmichael--and I worked together in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. We honestly felt that we could topple...
None of this is to suggest that corporate welfare alone is responsible for the plight of the state's schools. While it certainly is one of the contributing factors, there are others. For example, at the same time the state passes out tax breaks wholesale, it does not contribute one cent to building construction or other capital needs of schools, as many other states do. The peaceful resistance movement sought to raise awareness of the plight of the Ogoni and Ogoniland. It was through this movement that Saro-Wiwa earned his global reputation as a peaceful demonstrator for human rights and environmental responsibility...
...familiar endgame. UNSCOM workers are returning to Baghdad; they'll resume weapons inspections Tuesday. Iraqi newspapers are declaring victory in the standoff, because it drew attention once more to their country's plight under sanctions. The Clinton administration warily awaits the return of the inspectors and talks half-heartedly about restoring funding to the depleted Iraqi opposition in absentia. And the U.S. and Britain rattle some more sabers at Saddam, insisting that it'll be different next time. "Force will be used with no further warning if compliance is not forthcoming," said Britain's U.N. ambassador Jeremy Greenock...
