Most other foreign reporters could identify with ZDF's plight. Many complained that they were barred from certain briefings and often could not get an audience with political heavyweights. But the most consistent gripe concerned hotel accommodations. In Atlanta the Democrats assigned many foreign journalists to hotels 25 to 30 miles from the convention center. They were closer to the action in New Orleans, but many complained that the hotels assigned by the Republicans were second-rate and sometimes downright seedy. Alejandro Rodrigo, an Argentine working for Italy's ANSA news agency, described them as "below Third World standards...
...world's most famous prisoner celebrated his 70th birthday last week in Pollsmoor Prison, outside Cape Town. Isolated from the other inmates, Nelson Mandela refused the government's offer of a special six-hour birthday visit from his family as a way of protesting the plight of thousands of black activists jailed in South Africa. Meanwhile, Pretoria ordered roadblocks around the prison and clamped down on tributes to Mandela, including outdoor meetings, a private tea party and a concert at the University of Cape Town, which ended with the arrival of riot police in gas masks...

But he does radiate to voters his own sense of being chosen. Sam Beer, Harvard's famous professor of government, who taught Dukakis at Swarthmore, says, "He was born to rule." He was always the Inevitable Michael. Things fall into place for him as by plan...

A pair of drought-relief bills designed to distribute at least $7 billion is moving through Congress. Farmers who lose more than 35% of their normal crop would be reimbursed for 65% of their lost revenues. A ceiling of $100,000 would be put on the disaster benefits so that large corporate farms would not benefit disproportionately from the legislation. Drought relief has the full support of President Reagan...
...Jesse L. Jackson isn't the only preacher eager to capture some of the media spotlight. The Rev. Al Sharpton is in Atlanta to draw attention to the plight of Tawana Brawley, the 16 year-old New York girl who says she was kidnapped and raped by six white men in a racial attack...
